Frequently Asked Questions

Facilities & Lodging

Campers stay in cabins with about 7 other kids around their age and at least 2 camp counselors. Each cabin is equipped with electricity and lighting. Bunk beds have foam camp mattresses on them with plastic covers. Campers should provide their own sleeping bags and pillows. Shower and bathroom facilities are separate buildings located near the cabins.

Two shower houses are available so that your child does not have to walk too far for a bathroom or shower. Each shower house has private toilet stalls and private shower stalls. Other buildings on camp have private bathrooms as well.

Trained staff members are in place (lifeguards, nurses, instructors, first aid, etc.). Activities areas are well marked and fenced where necessary. Proper supervision is maintained. All campers tour camp on their first day to make sure they are aware of areas where special caution is needed.

Food & Nutrition

We serve well rounded meals with care taken to make sure our menu includes foods most children enjoy. A salad bar is often available to supplement a meal.

Click here to see a typical menu.

We work with campers that have food allergies each week at camp. Please contact us several weeks before camp so we can get you connected with our Food Service Director to determine the best plan for your camper.

Health Care & Emergencies

Trained staff members are in place (lifeguards, nurses, instructors, first aid, etc.). Activities areas are well marked and fenced where necessary. Proper supervision is maintained. All campers tour camp on their first day to make sure they are aware of areas where special caution is needed.

A Registered Nurse is on hand around the clock to provide first aid and medical attention as directed by your family physician. (Pages 2-4 of our Health Form must be completed by your doctor prior to camp to give us this direction.)

Any child on medication will receive his medicine at the proper times from our nurse. Any illness or injury that occurs during camp will be assessed by our nurse and proper measures taken factoring instructions from the medical form. Parents will be notified in the event of a serious illness or injury.

Our staff, the nurse and other moms at camp are prepared to handle homesick situations. If necessary, we will call home to get direction from mom and dad.

We encourage parents to write emails and/or letters to their child while at camp. Parents can sign up for e-camp where they can email their child and see pictures of camp activities each day. You can also send mail to your child at the camp’s address. In the case of an emergency you can contact the camp 24/7. We ask that campers leave cellular phones and other electronics at home.

Other Questions

All staff members love the Lord and love working with children. Each staff member is screened carefully with three references and a pastor to contact. Interviews and background checks are performed.

Our total staff to camper ratio is always better than 1:3.

In each cabin there are two or three leaders and about eight campers. There are plenty of other staff members around camp as well. Usually there are 70-80 staff members taking care of 90-100 campers.

Bed time is roughly 10:30 or 11:00 pm (depending on the age of the child) and they can sleep in until 8:20 am. Leaders of cabins with younger campers are encouraged to provide some rest time during the day.

The daily schedule varies for each program. Every program includes the following on a daily basis:

  • Regular meal times
  • Game times
  • Praise & worship
  • Adventure Activities
  • Bible Exploration
  • Camp Store time
  • Swimming
  • Cabin Cleanup
  • Campfire

Activities may vary for specialty programs. For specific information on each program, refer to the program’s page on our website.

SUMMER STAFF

Serve on our summer team

About Summer Staff

Camp Hickory Hill relies on many staff and volunteers to serve the Lord through this ministry during our summer camp programs. Whether you’ve served on our summer team before or if this would be your first time, we’re glad you’re interested in serving. In this section you will find information about summer positions and how to apply to be on our team, along with other resources to help you prepare to serve this summer. If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected]

Senior Leaders oversee a cabin group or an activity, such as fishing, canoeing, or sports, and can serve for 1 week or more.

Collegian Leaders oversee a cabin group or an activity, and sometimes receive special certified training to help at specific activities, like our High Ropes Challenge Course or Rock Wall. Collegian leaders make up a good core of our summer staff, and we would love to have you as a part of this team!

Junior Leaders assist in a cabin or activity. Their leadership skills are developed through the supervision of Collegians and Senior Leaders, and are given more responsibility as they grow in their leadership development. Junior Leaders must have completed our Leader in Training program.

Our Leader in Training Program is designed to develop godly leadership skills in teens that will help them grow in their faith while implementing on-the-job leadership. For more information on this program click here.

We have a camp nurse on site at all times while summer camp is in session. If you are a certified medical professional, please consider spending a week of your time in this position. Contact us for more information on qualifications.

Our kitchen staff keeps the entire camp running! It takes a large team of cooks to keep everyone fed. If you enjoy working in the kitchen, this position may be for you.
